DID YOU KNOW
DID YOU KNOW that IT TAKES 660 Gallons of water to make your favourite hamburger?
According to The Atlantic, 135 PEOPLE can take a shower in the amount of water it takes to produce just 1 POUND OF BEEF!
1 pound of beef requires 1,799 gallons of water, which includes irrigation of the grains and grasses in feed, plus water for drinking and processing. Water has been fed into the grain that’s been fed to the cattle, the cattle’s been made into beef.
According to statistics from the World Bank, 27% of humanity’s freshwater consumption goes to producing animal food, and the livestock sector is responsible for about 15% of all human-made emissions globally, which is equivalent to the emissions from all the forms of transport in the world, including the cumulative emissions of planes, trains, cars and ships.
While we can’t stop buying food altogether, it is possible to make consumer choices that limit the amount of water used to maintain our lifestyle. By going vegetarian, or at least opt for less wasteful meats, such as goat. Order a soy or a bean burger instead of beef.
Alternative sources of protein offer more sustainable and environmentally friendly production processes. They will also make it possible to support a growing global population. The World Economic Forum’s white paper on Alternative Proteins lays out the case that current rates of meat consumption cannot scale to meet the needs of a projected 10 billion people by 2050.
Keep in mind that water scarcity affects 2.7 billion people worldwide for at least a month each year. Water should not be treated as disposable. It’s a privilege and deserves great respect because, without it, we cannot survive.
